Why Baby Led Weaning?

by Demii Kloster

Introducing solids into your baby's diet can be scary and EXTREMELY intimidating for us parents! Allergies? Choking? There are so many new "what-ifs".

The recommendation from Health Canada is to introduce solids to our littles at 6 months of age. There are a variety of reasons this recommendation (nourishment, exploration, etc.) The normal practice has been to offer a progression-type entrance to the world of eating. To start small and work your way up. Typically, it has been encouraged that parents start with pureed foods and progress with texture, consistency and food size. However, things change. The world adapts.

Believe it or not,  at 6 months of age our babes are actually equipped with the motor skills and mental acuity to tolerate more than just applesauce and pureed pears.

Studies have shown that bypassing this pureed/blenderized stage altogether can not only offer greater nutritional variety, it can offer early advanced dexterity and help developmentally as well. It helps our littles to excel in skills they would have otherwise learned months later. What’s not great about that?!

This approach to eating has been termed ‘baby-led-weaning (BLW).’ Not because we’re weaning them from breastmilk or formula, but because we’re weaning them onto solids.

There are certain methods, approaches and food preparations that can make this method of infant feeding extremely successful to help support their nutritional and developmental needs; however, it can also bring some fears and apprehension for parents. That’s why I’m here. Let me show you WHY the BLW approach to infant feeding can benefit you and your baby in so many ways! I also want to make it comfortable. Approachable. Doable. Supported.

Us, as parents, want the best for our children and nourishment is so key and critical! The best we can do is educate ourselves and learn what works best for us. Parenthood is tough … but feeding our children can be easy!
