We are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week the only way we know how to, with a blog and photos! We asked a few of our local moms to share their feeding journies with us and accompanied it with a photo shoot of them and their littles downtown Barrie.
Their stories will be shared one by one over the course of the next few weeks. However, I wanted to share about the photo shoot and what my experience was like from behind the lens. For the most part, the shoot was pleasant. The businesses in the downtown were breastfeeding friendly. We really only had a one or two people who decided they needed to voice their disgust.
One gentleman in particular made an extrememly inappropriate comment, but the women seemed unphased. When I asked how this gentleman's comments made them feel one of them responded with "Oh, it doesn't even phase me. People are going to say what they are going to say, and I'm going to continue feeding my baby despite." It is a woman's right to feed her baby how and when she chooses, and women are protected by the law. Anyone who is uncomfortable with it has to acknowledge whatever is happening internally within themselves and continue on with their days without making a fuss.
Not letting that one instance tamper our spirits, we continued on to the lakeshore and spirit catcher for more feeding shots. The beauty and connection that I witnessed between the moms and their babies was indescribable. Such tenderness and love, and such innocence in their little eyes. Everything they wanted and needed in life was in their mother's arms.
We finished off the day with a stop at Flying Monkeys Brewery for some beers, babies, and boobies! Kelly Welch from Lovely and Littles hung out with us and enjoyed a beer while feeding her baby on the patio. This was AWESOME for me to see as I think it's important that we start to dispell the "pump and dump" myth when it comes to breastfeeding and drinking. It is completely safe for you to have a drink while feeding your baby. If you'd like more insight on it, check out Dr. Jack Newman's article.
We'd like to do something of this nature every year in hopes that we continue to make downtown Barrie a more feeding friendly place. Also, a huge thank you to The Paperie by Katie Willians, Ripe Juicery, Bohemia, and Everleigh Garden and for making your businesses and place moms can feel comfortable feeding their babies in!
